The Edwards & Sanborn Solar and Energy Storage facility, located in the Mojave Desert, California, stands as a testament to the rapid advancements in renewable energy. This impressive project boasts a capacity of 875 MW and a remarkable energy storage capability of 3,287 MWh, making it currently the world’s largest solar and battery storage facility.
Construction commenced in early 2021, with operations beginning in February 2023. The facility officially reached full operational status in January 2024, sprawling across 1,886 hectares in one of the sunniest regions on Earth. The scale of the project is significant, incorporating over 1.9 million solar panels and 120,720 battery storage packs, all interconnected by 724 km of cabling.
While not the largest solar farm by land area globally, the Edwards & Sanborn facility surpasses Vistra’s Moss Landing facility in California and represents a significant leap forward in combining solar power generation with clean energy solutions. The Golmud Solar Park in China holds the title of the world’s largest solar energy project in terms of total capacity, with approximately 80 plants contributing to a total installed capacity of 2.8 GW.
The increasing prominence of solar energy reflects a global commitment to transitioning towards more sustainable energy sources. According to the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Electricity Report 2024, the share of renewable energy in global electricity production is projected to rise from 30% in 2023 to 37% by 2026, with solar power playing a leading role in this expansion. The IEA further predicts that renewable energy will surpass coal as the dominant source of electricity worldwide by 2025.

Recognizing the urgency of this transition, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has outlined five key actions for accelerating the shift to renewable energy. These include transforming renewable energy technology into a global commodity, improving access to components and raw materials, creating a level playing field for renewable energy technologies, shifting energy subsidies from fossil fuels, and significantly increasing investment in renewable energy—aiming for at least $4 trillion annually by 2030.
Secretary-General Guterres emphasizes that renewable energy is the cornerstone of true energy security, stable electricity prices, and the creation of sustainable job opportunities. “Without renewable energy, there can be no future,” he stated, underscoring the critical role of advancements like the Edwards & Sanborn facility in securing a sustainable future.
