Renewable energy Ho Chi Minh City development is crucial for environmental protection and fostering sustainable growth in the vibrant megacity. This article explores the significant potential, inherent opportunities, and prevailing challenges associated with integrating clean energy sources within Ho Chi Minh City’s urban landscape. Drawing upon expert insights from industry leaders like Vu Phong Energy Group, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of how renewable energy initiatives are shaping the city’s future, contributing to a greener economy, and enhancing its competitive edge in sustainable urban development.

Developing Renewable Energy in Ho Chi Minh City

On July 29, the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) hosted a program titled “Developing Renewable Energy in Ho Chi Minh City – Opportunities and Challenges.” The discussion featured key insights from Mr. An, Pham Dang, Deputy General Director of Vu Phong Energy Group, and Mr. Son, Ha Dang, Director of the Center for Energy Research and Green Growth. They shared valuable perspectives on the potential, opportunities, and challenges for developing renewable energy sources in Ho Chi Minh City. For more details on the program, you can refer to Voice of Vietnam’s program on renewable energy development in Ho Chi Minh City.

The Potential of Renewable Energy Sources

Regarding the potential of renewable energy sources to contribute to Ho Chi Minh City’s sustainable development, Mr. An, Pham Dang, specifically highlighted rooftop solar power and offshore wind power. He emphasized that Ho Chi Minh City possesses the most significant potential for solar power, particularly for rooftop solar power systems. As a megacity with over 12 million residents and concentrated construction, Ho Chi Minh City benefits from favorable natural conditions and a climate highly suitable for developing rooftop solar power systems. The city receives an average of 100 to 300 hours of sunshine per month, with the maximum occurring during the dry season. The total technical potential for rooftop solar power systems for businesses in Ho Chi Minh City exceeds 5,000 MWp. Each 1 MWp rooftop solar power system developed in the city is estimated to reduce annual CO2 emissions by approximately 1,000 tons. Consequently, the widespread adoption of rooftop solar power in Ho Chi Minh City will not only contribute significantly to environmental protection but also enhance the competitiveness of a green, sustainable urban environment. In the longer term, offshore wind power, especially in the coastal region of Can Gio within Ho Chi Minh City, is also identified as a critical renewable energy source. The development of offshore wind power in the Can Gio coastal region is expected to create new opportunities for accompanying technologies, including hydrogen power plants.

The Role of Vu Phong Energy Group

Mr. An underscored that this period is crucial for developing rooftop solar power to serve factories seeking clean energy to green their production processes and bolster their competitiveness in the international market. He elaborated that Vu Phong Energy Group pioneered the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) cooperation model, which involves investing in and developing solar power systems for businesses, enabling them to utilize the energy without relying on the grid. Many prominent Vietnamese enterprises, including Vinamilk and Kem Nghia, are actively adopting solar power and opting for this effective model. Vu Phong Energy Group collaborates closely with its customers throughout the entire process, from initial project preparation, through construction and installation, to ongoing Operation and Maintenance (O&M) services. This comprehensive support ensures both environmental protection and optimized financial benefits from using clean energy solutions.

Vu Phong Energy Group’s Activities

Sharing insights from the VOV program is just one of Vu Phong Energy Group’s notable activities in July. During the first month of the third quarter, Vu Phong Energy Group continued to accelerate progress into the second half of 2023. All Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) and Operation and Maintenance (O&M) activities are executed with meticulous attention to detail. Vu Phong engineers work diligently on various projects to complete and deliver systems on schedule, allowing client businesses to quickly integrate renewable electricity into their production operations while meeting renewable energy utilization criteria and greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. Furthermore, Vu Phong Energy Group is actively negotiating and finalizing cooperation agreements with several new customers to develop solar projects through Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), with a particular focus on expanding its presence in the Northern region.
